Just shy of six feet in length, this quality used “Living Room Grand”, known as either a Steinway Model L or a Steinway Model O, offers a resonant sound of incredible depth and warmth, and is ideal for teaching studios, spacious apartments and homes. The richness of the lower bass range is in part enhanced by the elongation of the strings and the sound board. Manufactured in New York 2001.

The Steinway & Sons Model L is among the larger sized Steinway ‘baby grands’. The Steinway Model L scale design is based very closely on its predecessor the Model O. The Model L with its square tail, was designed to replace the same-size Model O which featured a rounded tail. The cast iron plate and soundboard conform to the square tail providing additional soundboard space at the rear of the instrument when compared to its predecessor. The Steinway Model L was manufactured from 1924 until 2005. In 2005 the Model L was discontinued by Steinway & Sons and replaced with the piano it had superseded all those years ago, the Model O.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Design: Features a distinctive “square” tail compared to the more rounded Model O, allowing for a slightly larger soundboard area.
  • Construction: Built with a rim made of 14 laminations of hard rock maple, and keys made of Bavarian spruce.
  • Production Era: Manufactured primarily by the New York factory from 1924 until 2005, when it was replaced by the Model O.

Reputation and Use

  • Versatile Sound: The Model L is praised for its warm, resonant, and powerful tonal quality that accommodates various musical styles, from classical to jazz.
  • Impeccable Craftsmanship: Each piano was meticulously handcrafted, a testament to Steinway’s commitment to detail and quality, contributing to its enduring legacy.
  • Popular Choice: Many professional pianists choose the Model L for their homes or practice studios due to its responsive action and the rich sound it produces despite its relatively compact size.
  • Legacy: Although discontinued, its legacy continues through the reintroduction of the Model O in 2005, and well-maintained or rebuilt Model L pianos remain highly sought after by musicians.
The Model L is highly regarded in the used market for its balanced tone, often described as having a deep, lyrical, and resonant sound, making it one of the most popular vintage Steinway models.
